Advice for parents with teenage children to stop them from smoking.
Many parents would probably like to know how to help their teenage children avoid smoking.
All parents would advise their kids not to smoke, but like many other pieces of advice from parents to teenagers this might not be enough. Studies in the USA show that nearly 9 out of 10 regular smokers had already tried smoking before they were 18.
We think the key to really making sure that teenage children stay clear of the lure of cigarettes and smoking is to educate them fully about smoking. Many parents believe that by educating their teenagers that it is enough just to sit them down and tell them a few things about the dangers of smoking. This is always a good idea, but is it the right way?
Another well trodden path for parents is too promise their children that they will get something big, like a car, or a driving license, if they don’t start smoking. This is a more expensive method for sure but it might not work either.
The reason that these ideas for deterring teens from smoking are not very successful is usually because parents and teens alike don’t really know much about nicotine and how addictive it can be. Parents think they can bribe their kids into not smoking and teens often think they can smoke a bit and just stop when they feel like it.
What will work. How to really make sure your children won’t smoke.
Smoking is such a big waste of a person’s time, energy, money and health that we recommend that you make it a family project to all read our book about smoking so that parents and children both understand how cigarettes and nicotine can fool you into become a smoker for years.
Even if you as a parent don't smoke and even if your kids don't smoke, it could be an eye-opener for you all to know the truth about smoking and how it can worm its way into your children's lives. Our book “Stepbac® from Smoking” tells you all about the 4 things that make people want to smoke and then one way to stop smoking.
If no-one in the family smokes then of course you won’t need the last part, but the information about nicotine, habits, cravings and tobacco company marketing will be a big help for parents and children to understand that smoking is not just something you choose to try and then “unchoose” again. Smoking is very addictive and choosing to try even one or two cigarettes can affect your children's health for many years.
When we published our book “Stepbac® from Smoking”, Carl, one of the authors had a teenage daughter who was 17 years old, exactly around the age when many kids feel a bit rebellious and are tempted by marketing or friends to try adult things like smoking and drinking.
She read the book even though she had not smoked at all and after reading it, she felt that she was better prepared to take a “Stepbac” from anyone who her offered a cigarette or who tried to convince her it was cool. She knew how the cigarettes and nicotine were trying to trick her and she knew how to resist the temptation. Also she loved that her dad’s and uncle’s book “Stepbac® from Smoking” was so easy and fun to read.
So instead of promising kids an expensive driving licence or a car or some other expensive gift if they don’t start smoking, try and make them understand that the gift will be a long and fulfilling life of health, if they read our book and if they agree to discuss the book as a family to see if everyone has understood the significance of not starting to smoke.
We sincerely believe, that teenagers read the book then they would be able to understand that smoking is not cool and understand what a negative impact it can have on their health. There is nothing scary in the book. We didn’t use scare tactics or photos of sick people, but we just explain how the drug nicotine in cigarettes will try and fool your brain into smoking.
So if Carl’s teenager daughter found the book easy to read, fun and easy to understand so why not give it a try for your teenagers. It’s also available in paperback on Amazon.
If you already have teens who are experimenting with smoking, then you can also order a special edition signed by the authors with a special message for your kids. You never know - getting a signed edition with a message from both you and the authors might show how much you care about your children’s health which might make them pay attention. Let us know how it goes. Oh and if you smoke yourselves as parents, we really hope you will read the book “Stepbac® from Smoking” and quit yourselves. It’s almost impossible to tell your kids not to do something that you do yourselves.
