What is the Mediterranean diet? How does it work?

It´s important to understand that what people call the "Mediterranean diet," is not a weight-loss diet, like for example, the South Beach diet, the Carnivore diet, the Keto diet, the AmazingQuinn Diet (ok I made that last one up) and others.

The word diet has two meanings in modern English.

It can mean "things people eat" which is the original meaning of the word - and it can also mean a "weight-loss diet." which is a more recent and increasingly common use of the word.

People used to say "weight-loss diet" and then it became easier just to say "diet" - and now many people think that the word diet means a weight loss method.

The Mediterranean diet is not a weight loss diet.

The Mediterranean diet is simply means "what people, who live in the Mediterranean region, eat."

In the same way one could say that the British diet means "what people in Britain traditionally eat."

Healthy lifestyle diet.

The Mediterranean diet is a healthy lifestyle diet based on the traditional healthy eating habits of people who live in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. 

Countries that traditionally eat the Mediterranean diet included France, Greece, Italy and Spain among many others. 

The Mediterranean diet varies quite a lot by country and region, so it has a wide range of recipes, dishes and ingredients.

But in general terms the Mediterranean diet is high on vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil and low on meats and dairy products.

The Mediterranean diet has been linked with good health, especially a healthier heart and natural weight. Other factors are the Mediterranean climate which allow people to spend more time outdoors and the relaxed lifestyle which makes them happier and less prone to binge eating.
