What is a New Year's Resolution?
A resolution is defined as a “firm decision to do something - or not to do something”.
A New Year resolution is usually a decision that one hopes will be "life-changing"
When you make a resolution, you "resolve" to do something. In other words, you decide to do it.
Many New Years resolutions are about starting a starting or stopping a lifestyle habit in order to make a major lifestyle improvement - in other words most of us want to change something that will lead to "a better life" and make us "feel better"
Why make resolutions at New Year?
The reason we make resolutions in Januaryis because it's convenient. First of all it's easy to count the days, weeks, months from a starting date of January 1st.
Try starting a resolution on April 23rd and tell me now how many months it was since you started. January is easier for counting days and years.
Another reason we make resolutions for a new year, is that January is the first day in a new year. The word "new" in new year also gives us hope that this can be the first day of a new life that will be changed by our new year resolutions.
For these reasons it New Year feels like the perfect time for a firm decision to start a better and healthier life.
How many people make New Year resolutions?
Studies indicate that around half the population in the Western world make some kind of "New Year's Resolution". Some make just one and others make a little list.
Which NY resolutions work best?
It depends on the person and the resolution. Some resolutions are easier to accomplish than others. Here are some examples of NY resolutions that should be easy to accomplish."Visit my parents more often." That should be achieveable, especially if you live in the same area.
"Call my parents more often." That sounds very achieveable for most of us.
"Start saving up for a new outfit." Also sounds achievable because no amount or time limit was specified in that resolution, so even if you only save up 20 dollars in 12 months you will have accomplished the resolution of starting to save up.
"Look around for a new job." Definately an achievable resolution because it's vague and without fixed deadlines.
These are all examples of good New Year's resolutions because they are small resolutions that are easily achievable.
What are the most popular NY resolutions?
Most New Year resolutions are about self-improvement and better health. Not many people would make a serious resolution to smoke more or do other things that are bad for them.
The most popular New Year's resolution of all time is a general resolution that goes something like "make the most of life" - or "live a fuller life!"
This is not really a resolution, but more of an sentiment - or a wish, because it hasn't got a specific plan or method, like the Stepbac® method
Weight is one of the toughest New Year's resolutions
One of the most popular NY resolution is to lose weight. This is considered also by many to be one of the toughest New Year resolutions
It is tough because many people make a resolution to lose weight but don't have a real plan for how to do it.
Like we said above, a resolution without a plan is more like a wish - and sadly as we all know, not many wishes come true by themselves.
The lack of a good plan is why New Year's resolutions to lose weight will fail by the end of January
Then what? Usually after a few years of failing New Year Resolutions, many people make one last resolution to stop making resolutions! To stop taking it seriously.
People give up up on New Year resolutions altogether. Instead of losing weight - they lose the resolutions.
By doing so they join the population half who don't make New Year's resolutions.
That's a shame, in our opinion.
New Year's resolution can easily work with some planning and January is a fine time to make a big change in one's life.
That said, with a good plan you can change your daily overeating habits on any day of the year, but this web page is about New Year's resolutions so let's focus on how to eat less from 2020.
How to make a weight loss NY Resolution work
A resolution can easily be achieved with the proper planning. But you need to understand and prepare a few things to make a lose weight resolution work.
Many people assume that the way to lose weight is to go on a diet of some kind - and hit the gym.
None of these methods work and it's amazing that so many people still believe that a diet and the gym will help them lose weight.
The reason diets and gyms don´t help with weight loss is because both are short term solutions that are very gruelling and ineffective in the long term.
The only way to permanently adjust your weight to your natural body weight is to eat less every day for the rest of your life.
You don´t have to join a gym, but you do have to walk a little more every day. So more daily movement.
The combination of eating the natural amount that your body needs to power itself and a natural amount of body movement on a daily basis is all you need to stay at a natural and healthy weight.
So how can you achieve this?
First you need a good understanding of why you overeat? What makes you eat too much every day. What makes you eat more than your body needs to survive?
Then you need a good method to eat less. For most people just making a resolution is not enough. A decision is not enough. A wish is not enough. Willpower is not enough.
Why not? Because overeating is a form of addiction. Most people cannot just decide to stop eat less using willpower because they are addicted to certain foods, mostly sugary foods, snacks and candy.
A very few fortunate people might be able to change overeating habits using willpower, but most people are not able to.
If it were that easy to stop overeating, then everyone would just be able to eat less from one day to the next.
It's not easy to stop overeating because oversweeating food, what we at Stepbac® call "Candyfood" creates a very powerful addiction of habits and cravings that hijack and change your body's natural hunger process.
This means it takes more than just "New Year's resolve" to stop overeating and lose weight. You have to understand how you are being tricked into overeating and you have to prepare.
You need a good method, like the Stepbac® method, and a good understanding of the challenge to eat less and change eating habits
Most New Year's resolutions to lose weight fail because of a lack of understanding about the power of a sugar addiction, cravings to eat and the many daily overeating habits.
It's easy to stop overeating and to lose weight, when you know how.
What about willpower?
Willpower means doing someone using the power of will alone.
The force of your will. If you want it enough you can do it. That's willpower. But willpower can be short-lived without a plan.
For many people willpower by itself not enough to stop overeating because of the sugar in processed foods which hijacks the body's natural hunger process.
What is willpower?
How do you power your will? Where is the power coming from to strenghen your will?We can use willpower to make decisions. Our usual willpower works very well for decisions about change that is unrelated to addiction.
"I will never watch another Woody Allen movie again".
You can make that decision using your normal level of willpower, because no-one is addicted to a movie.
If you were addicted to a movie you would watch the exact same movie many times a day for the rest of your life - like an overeating addiction.
Overeating is an addiction and a lifestyle. Many overeaters try to use their normal level of willpower to decide to eat less. It does not work.
You need to strengthen and prepare your will for beat a sugar addiction and change overeating habits.
You need to power your will more than usual to fight this and lose weight. You have to pump your willpower up and get it ready to fight an addiction.
How to strengthen your willpower
The way to pump up your willpower is to give your will the power of information.
Information is the power which makes your willpower stronger. A stronger willpower combined with a simple method like the Stepbac® method can beat overeating and sugar addiction in a few days.
If you learn the Stepbac® information about how to eat less and how exactly to change overeating habits, then you will have strong willpower to fight the sugar withdrawal symptoms and the overeating cravings.
Using the Stepbac® information you can then use the Stepbac® action to change your daily overeating habits.
